Three majors. Your path to success.

The Jamestown College Computer Science Department offers three majors and two minors: Computer Science (major and minor), Management Information Science (major), and starting in the Fall of 2006, Information Technology (major and minor).

Mission Statement

We are a department dedicated to a curriculum of academic excellence that encourages the development of moral and ethical computer professionals who are a benefit to society. We also serve the entire college community by providing sound instruction in the use of computers in order to foster computer literacy.

Compare the Three Different Majors. Choose the one that's right for you.

Information Technology (IT): The IT professional seeks to apply computer applications, networking, and databases to create solutions for individuals, organizations, education, and businesses. Students will study theory and applications of databases, web design, computer programming, networks, and operating systems. Students will learn to identify and evaluate current and emerging technologies and to assess their applicability to the users’ needs. The Liberal Arts environment at Jamestown College allows students with an aptitude for technology to also take courses in areas of individual interest: music, communications, art, psychology, etc.

Computer Science (CS): The Computer Science major focuses on the study of the computer itself – how it is built, how the hardware and software works, and how to program the computer to achieve a task. The typical computer science application involves writing large programs using traditional programming languages and focusing on software architecture, data structures, and algorithm development issues. By learning the theory behind the machine and the programming of the machine, students strive to improve the hardware efficiency and build better applications, which the IT professional would help his/her clients adopt and use successfully.

Management Information Science (MIS): The Management Information Science major focuses specifically on how businesses use and apply computers and database technology in today’s information economy. The major consists of computer courses that center on database use, programming and systems design and business courses such as accounting, finance, management, and marketing. These are designed to provide the student with the managerial skills and the technical competencies needed to effectively enable technology in a business environment.

Related Concentrations

Traditionally, students taking the computer science and management information science majors have sought concentrations or minors in business administration, accounting, or mathematics.

Technology has emerged in virtually all employment areas in today’s world. Students majoring in information technology may seek to pursue courses in many areas of personal interest, such as: music, education, criminal justice, psychology, art, languages, or communication.
