 Foreign Language Department

Mission Statement

The mission statement of the Foreign Language Department at Jamestown College is to help prepare the liberal arts student as a citizen of our global community. We seek to expose students to other languages and cultures, thereby broadening their concepts of language, civilization, culture, philosophy, government, religion, geography, art, aesthetics and literature with a firm anchoring in a Christian perspective and academic excellence.

As our world grows ever smaller, it is more important than ever to increase our awareness of other people and their cultures. Learning a new language is an excellent way to expand your world and train your mind.

Study Abroad

The Foreign Language Department at Jamestown College offers study abroad opportunities for students majoring or minoring in Spanish through the MLSA (Modern Language Study Abroad) program in San José, Costa Rica, or in Madrid, Spain, in month-long intensive summer language learning programs that combine university-level study with homestay living experience.

Students who are majoring in French or German must spend a semester or year abroad as part of their study; students of Spanish who do not take Spanish through the summer study with the MLSA-Jamestown College program also need to take a semester or year abroad to complete their studies.

Since 2005 Jamestown College has participated in ISEP (International Student Exchange Program), an international consortium of schools for study abroad.

About Majors and Minors

Jamestown College offers majors and minors in French, German, and Spanish. Students can complete their minors on campus. Students majoring in French, German or Spanish must complete their major studies through study abroad or through immersion language programs approved by the foreign language department. Jamestown College offers study abroad through ISEP (International Student Exchange Program) for students wishing to complete major studies in French, German or Spanish.

Organizations and Activities

Alpha Mu Gamma - Jamestown College hosts the Mu Rho chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, the national foreign language honor society. The organization is open to students who have received A's in at least two courses in the same language at the college level. The purpose of the organization is to foster language study, organize language-related activities for the campus community and beyond and to encourage themselves and others to become fluent in languages other than English. Jamestown College's Mu Rho chapter was chartered in 1998. Associate Professor Cecil Roth serves as the chapter advisor.

International Student Organization - ISO is an organization of international and American students who are interested in learning about other people, cultures and world affairs. Club members take part in a variety of campus activities, host speakers, attend international film showings and theatre performances, enjoy ethnic dinners, and share travel experiences. ISO organizes activities to celebrate world cultures and works to raise students' awareness of the world. They have organized international fashion shows, multi-lingual chapel services, presentations by international students and faculty and more. Associate Professor Katherine Stevenson serves as the advisor of ISO.
