 Health & Physical Education Department

Mission Statement

The mission of the Health and Physical Education Department is to thoroughly prepare students for a variety of professions. The department will specifically produce physical educators and coaches who have acquired a developmentally sound and complete background in the physical, psychological, neuromuscular, and cognitive domains of physical education. The department will also prepare students for managerial, supervisory, and administrative positions in a variety of professional health/fitness careers. The Health and Physical Education Department also provides students with the foundation for further study in a variety of areas at the graduate level.

Program Strengths

Many students explore the possibility of turning an interest in sports and physical fitness into a career. A major in physical education or health and fitness administration may be just the career for a person with those interests.
  • The Jamestown College HPE department strives to play a leading role in the growth and development of competent physical educators, athletic coaches, and health and fitness administrators who will contribute successfully to the well-being of our society by enabling students to pursue the study of the biological, psychological, sociological, spiritual, and biomechanical foundations on which this profession rests.
  • The department strongly advocates the need for educating and preparing young people for a lifetime commitment to, and involvement in, physical activity as well as the knowledge and practical abilities necessary in the teaching and administration of this highly skilled profession.
  • As a liberal arts institution, Jamestown College is very much aware of the physiological and psychological importance of a strong and viable physical education program, as well as the extracurricular programs that are derivatives of the program.
