Barbara McClintock ('77), New Canaan, Conn., says she was born under a lucky star. The award-winning author and illustrator of children's books views her success not only as a combination of perseverance and talent, but also as a reflection of her life experiences, including her Jamestown College education.
"Jamestown College was just a great place for me," says McClintock. "I was able to grow and mature at my own pace. I would have really had a hard time at a larger art school." McClintock was born in Clinton, N.J., and moved to North Dakota with her mother and sister when she was nine years old. "I feel so lucky to have seen different parts of the country," she says. "I've had a very rich life experience." McClintock says Jamestown College provided a solid foundation for her career, thanks to the encouragement of professors and classmates. |

Ken Hall '91 and his business partners sell comfort food with a contemporary twist. Last November, Hall, Keri Barney and Jodene Jensen opened P.B. Loco, a store in the Mall of America that sells its own brand of peanut butter, with mouthwatering flavors ranging from the familiar to the exotic. The venture has proven to be so successful that the three former lawyers have expanded their business to include operating their own manufacturing facility, selling their signature peanut butter in grocery stores and opening a second retail location. "I think having a liberal arts education is very valuable overall. Being an entrepreneur, you get your hands into everything," he says. "In today's world, everything changes so quickly and you need to always be able to learn new things." |

Steve Olson '98 and four others started Mortgage and Investment Consultants just four years ago in St. Paul, Minn. Today, the company is in nine states and employs approximately 400 people. Olson says business department professors Dennis Gash and Vicki Greshik, as well as his track coach, Rollie Greeno, had positive influences on him while he was a Jamestown College student. "The biggest thing I learned was goal setting," he says. "It's important to sit down and focus your energy through written goals. I wrote and rewrote. You can be pulled in many different directions, just constantly evaluate your goals." |

As much as Jasper Schneider's '01 business has grown, he's always considered it a hobby - one that started from his residence hall room when he was a junior at Jamestown College. After graduating from Jamestown College, Schneider, a criminal justice major, had planned to attend law school at Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn., full time, but he was offered a job as a marketing business analyst at Cisco Systems. He spent his first two years of law school as a weekend student, but Sudhian continued to gain steam.
Schneider has many fond memories of his Jamestown College education. He says Dr. Jim Stone was a great mentor and adviser, and he especially enjoyed Dr. David Lorenzo's constitutional law class in addition to the information technology classes he took. "The best things about Jamestown College are the size and how friendly people are," Schneider says. "It's a good atmosphere - a great place." |
