player and placed high in distance events in the North Dakota high school state track
meets. She attended UND-Williston and Bismarck Junior College before coming to
Jamestown College in 1982. Dixon got her first chance to compete in college cross
country in the fall of 1982. She won her first of three straight WACND conference
cross country individual titles and led her team to Conference and District championships.
Billie placed third in the 1982 District 12 meet, and she placed 34th at NAIA
Nationals (the highest ever by a Jimmie at that time). She led the Jimmies to 10th
place as a team (the only time a Jimmie team has ever finished in the top 10). Dixon
defeated 91.6 percent of her opponents in 1982. In the spring of 1983, Billie fought
back from a knee surgery. In the fall of 1983 she won the WACND conference title and
again placed third in District 12. She placed 57th at NAIA National meet, leading
the Jimmie team to a 15th place finish, and both the conference and district
championships. Dixon defeated 83.5 percent of her opponents in 1983. In 1984
Dixon was named to the NAIA Academic All-America team and placed seventh at the NAIA
National Outdoor Track & Field meet in the 10,000 meter run. She set school
records in the 5,000 meter, 10,000 meter runs and marathon, records which still stood at
the time of her induction. She was the WACND indoor conference champion in the 1500
and 3000 meter runs and set school records in both events. In 1985, her final cross
country season at JC, she won her third straight WACND individual title, added her first
NAIA District 12 individual championship, and topped it off by becoming the only Jimmie
cross country runner up to that time to earn All-America honors by placing 21st at the
NAIA national meet. Billie again led her team to conference and district
championships and another 15th place team finish at NAIA nationals. That year Billie
defeated 95.5 percent of all opponents, still a Jimmie cross country record. Even
though she participated in only three cross country seasons, Billie ranked number one on
the all-time scoring list at JC at the time of her graduation. She held the career
record for defeating 90.6 percent of her opponents, had 17 of the top 50 times ever
recorded in Jimmie cross country history. she won individual titles in 10 of her 25
cross country races. After graduating with a degree in Elementary Education and
Physical Education from Jamestown college in 1985, she went on to graduate school at
Arizona State. She later took over the head track coaching position at Grand Forks
Central High School where her teams claimed regional and state girl's track and field
championships. She became one of the most successful girl's track coaches in North
Dakota. Billie still teaches and coaches in the Grand Forks School System. |
