| Carolyn (Trostad)
Nelson was inducted into the Jamestown College
Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 18, 1999. During her
four years of competition in track & field at Jamestown College,
Carolyn was a coach's dream. When she graduated in 1985, she
was the all-time leading career scorer in Jimmie track & field with a
total of 595 points. She led her teams to four straight NDCAC Indoor
Conference championships and 3 consecutive Conference Outdoor team
championships. Her love of the sport provided the drive and determination
to never miss a single meet as a college athlete.
Carolyn excelled in the classroom as well as on the track and proved to
be a leader and a role model for other students and athletes. At the
culmination of her college track career, she chalked up a host of school
records: 60 meter dash (indoor - 8.0), 300 meter dash (indoor -
43.43), 100 meter dash (12.2), and 200 meter dash (25.86). She was a four
year regular in the 4 x 100 meter relay and ran legs on six different
relay teams that held school records at the time of her graduation.
The 4 x 400 meter relay time of 3:58.58 still remained a school record at
the time of her induction in 1999.
As a freshman, Carolyn led her team to indoor and outdoor conference
titles, the first conference track championships in school history.
She competed in the sprints and was a key link in several relays.
Carolyn led her team in scoring with 176 points in her sophomore year.
Her teams claimed their second straight indoor and outdoor conference
championships.
Carolyn's junior year in 1984 not only brought two more conference team
championships, but also included a trip to the NAIA National Track &
Field Championships in Charleston, West Virginia. She competed in
three relays at Charleston: the 4 x 100 relay, 800 meter medley
relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay. Carolyn again led the team in
scoring for the season.
Carolyn's senior year would prove to be the pinnacle of her track &
field career. Carolyn led her team once again to an indoor
conference championship and 8 consecutive wins at invitational meets.
Carolyn was the NAIA District 12 Champion in the 100 meter dash and set a
new District record. She was honored by the NAIA as an Academic
All-American.
At the time of her induction in 1999, Carolyn resides in Cooperstown,
ND and has worked for the USDA-Farm Service Agency there for the past 13
years. In the winter months, she officiates high school volleyball.
She is active in many community activities such as park board, an
after-school program board, church board, and athletic booster club.
On occasion, she helps work with the track athletes at Griggs County
Central High School. Carolyn is married to John Nelson, and they
have three children; Callie (10), Carissa (7), and Riley (2).
