| Purpose: Pi Lambda Theta is both an honor society and a professional association. As an honor society, our purpose is to recognize individuals of superior scholastic achievement and high potential for professional leadership. As a professional association, our purpose is to stimulate independently thinking educators who can ask critical questions to improve educational decision making.
Jamestown College Procedure: There are four ways to belong to Pi Lambda Theta: Campus Chapters, Professional Chapters, Member-at-Large, and Direct Honors. Jamestown College uses the Direct Honors and Member-at-Large program options. The Dean's Office or the School of Education certifies student eligibility. Members who join Pi Lambda Theta under the Direct Honors program join as Members-at-Large. The program is administered entirely by the international office of Pi Lambda Theta.
Each year the education department reviews all Teacher Candidates in our program. Those that meet the criteria for membership in this organization are listed and sent to the Pi Lambda Theta main office. The office then sends personal invitations to students to join the society. Those that choose to accept the invitation and become members receive all mailings and benefits of any member of Pi Lambda Theta. Graduates are given gold honor cords to wear with their graduation gown signifying this honor.
