 Virus Information

The Jamestown College Computer Center is committed to keeping our network free from viruses. Jamestown College has an agreement with Network Associates that allows faculty, staff, and students to use McAfee software on their computers on campus or at home. Follow the Download McAfee from Jamestown College link. Installing an anti-virus program is not enough it is also neccessary to keep it up to date. To download and install updates for McAfee Anti-virus program follow the Update link below. Then select DATs in the Software Updates section. Select the SuperDAT File (Engine + DAT) link in the Download Anti-Virus Updates (DATs) section of the web page. Finally select sdat####.exe for the Windows - Intel Platform. Note; we cannot link directly to the update file because the name changes with each update.

Besides viruses there are virus hoaxes that get sent through email warning you of a virus that cannot be detected by any anti-virus program. Quite often these emails are just hoaxes and are trying to scare users into thinking they have a virus. In the Virus and Hoax section below is a link to determine if the email you just received is telling the truth or is just a hoax. Also there is a link to the McAfee AVERT Alert page that lists new viruses and has a searchable database of older viruses.

In addition to viruses we have seen a flood of programs that are called "spyware". Spyware is a small program that often gets installed with free online programs and games or from visiting a web site that asks you to install an application to view it correctly. These programs run in the background and track the web sites you visit, your keyboard keystrokes, and install more spyware programs. These programs often slow a computer down to an unusable state. There are several applications that we recommend to remove and prevent spyware from infiltrating your system again; Spybot, Microsoft Windows Defender, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition, and Spywareblaster. These three programs are free to home users but have a pay for version that is optional.
