The impetus for the Character in Leadership Program flows from two sources.

First, it derives from an important facet of the college's mission, which, according to its trustees, is in part to "promote the responsible engagement [in the world] through unselfish service to others." It does so responding to the need for leaders who have highly developed organizational skills and who have a desire to serve others. The college historically has encouraged students to participate in activities both on and off the campus as a part of their educational program. This program will supplement and enhance existing efforts by providing a structure that emphasizes ethics and leadership.

Second, it originates in the college's commitment to education in the tradition of Christian love and values. That commitment entails the promotion of high standards of character through the creation of educational experiences that focus on ethics, stewardship, vision, and concern for others. According to its trustees, the college is "to build character as exemplified by the following traits: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship, courage, and caring".
