Organ recital Feb. 24

The Jamestown College Department of Music will present a faculty organ recital by Dr. William Wojnar, Professor of Music, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Voorhees Chapel. The recital is free and open to the public.

The program will be presented on the Black-Schlossman Pipe Organ, the gift of Anna Jane Schlossman and her family, Fargo, in memory of her father, the late George S. Black and her late husband, William A. Schlossman, both of whom had served on the college’s Board of Trustees for many years.

The program will include organ music by German, French, Belgian and English composers, from the 17th century to the present, including compositions based on well-known hymn tunes and a sonata for organ by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, composed for Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, younger sister of Frederick the Great. Dr. Wojnar holds degrees from Carroll University in Wisconsin, the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa. In recent years, his research on the eighteenth-century German composer Hieronymus Quehl has taken him to major libraries and churches across Europe, including Berlin and Krakow.

The pipe organ, the third such instrument to be installed in Voorhees Chapel, was completed in fall 1999 by the Johnson Organ Company, Fargo. It is notably one of the five largest pipe organs in North Dakota and a significant asset to music studies, concerts and Chapel services at Jamestown College.  It has a total of more 2,200 pipes.  As is necessary for pipe organs, the acoustics in Voorhees Chapel provide an ideal environment in which to hear the diverse colors of the instrument.
