Collegian wins regional award

The Collegian took first place in Best in Show for four-year colleges and universities with non-weekly newspapers. Student publications were represented from North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Michigan.

“This first place finish is a very prestigious regional award,” says Steve Listopad, Jamestown College Student Media Center Director. “For us to finish above a large university (second place North Dakota State) in a regional competition was a big surprise to all of us."

Editor-in-chief April Baumgarten says the award represents the achievement of the entire staff of about 30 students – including editors, writers, photographers, and sales representatives.

“I’m really proud of the staff,” she says. “Everyone has put in a lot of work to reach this goal.”

The Collegian has a 96-year history at Jamestown College and joined the Associated Collegiate Press in the 2003-04 school year. This is the first Best in Show first place award for the paper, which received third place in 2005 and honorable mention in 2006 and 2007. The Collegian also wins numerous awards each year at the North Dakota Professional Communicators college contest, including Best Collegiate Newspaper in 2009 and 2010.
