ROUGHRIDER HEALTH PROMOTION CONFERENCE

This year marks our 24th year of delivering ways to improve school health programs, healthy school environment and school to community collaboration. The Roughrider Health Promotion Association invites you to become part of our annual conference which will be held at Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND.

"Healthy Schools, Healthy Self, Healthy Communities-Survivors Through…A Coordinated School Health Approach" is this year's theme. The conference is structured around a coordinated school health approach, which provides a framework for school districts and schools to use in organizing and managing school health initiatives. Such school health programs systematically coordinate the following eight components:

  1. Health Services
  2. Health Education
  3. Healthy School Environment
  4. Nutrition
  1. Physical Education
  2. Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
  3. Health Promotion for Staff
  4. Family/Community Involvement

Modern school health programs integrate the efforts and resources of these component areas to promote health and prevent chronic diseases and their risk factors among young people. Over 350 educators, school administrators, counselors, public health nurses, coaches, school board members, parents and community members come together, developing action plans designed to positively impact the health of students. Human Service Regional Substance Abuse Coordinators and Tribal Coordinators, statewide volunteer educators, school counselors, health professionals and Departments of Health, Human Services and Public Instruction comprise the Roughrider Health Promotion Association Board and Planning Committee Staff.

Many times conferences are attended without the remaining staff receiving any information. This concept is what makes our conference different! Attendees come back to the school with an action plan and persons responsible for completing the plan. These participants will present the plan to the school staff so everyone is involved with the plan. Schools are provided a facilitator who will follow-up and provide technical assistance on the school's progress throughout the school year. At the end of the year schools complete a progress report or "Success Stories" of the positive school changes. School awards and recognition are given from these stories and reports.
