A Brief History of the Department |
|
| |
Courses in business (called "commerce" at the time) have been taught at Jamestown College since its founding in 1883. However, the first true program in business was not established until 1924 when a Major in Commerce was created. The following year saw the formation of the Department of Commerce at the college. A separate Department of Economics was formed in 1948, but merged with the Commerce Department ten years later to form a combined Department of Business Administration and Economics. At that time, the Major in Commerce was renamed and became the Major in Business Administration. A third Major in Accounting was added to the program in 1963, and in 1971, the College added Areas of Concentration to its Major in Business Administration. In order to reflect its range of course offerings, the department acquired its present name in 1998, and became the Department of Business, Accounting, and Economics. In 2000, the College launched the Roland E. Meidinger Center for Excellence in Business, which consists of several new programmatic initiatives for the department. In 2006, the department moved into its current home, the state-of-the-art Unruh and Sheldon Center for Business and Computer Science. Today, the Department of Business, Accounting, and Economics provides innovative, contemporary business education for the global economy, and offers many of the advantages of a larger business school in a small college setting. |
