At the recommendation of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), state law now requires that candidates who sit for the certified public accountant examination must have completed a 150-hour academic program. The intent of the AICPA recommendation is to generate CPAs/accountants who possess a broader base of knowledge that extends beyond accounting. Jamestown College requires a total of 128 credit hours for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Therefore, CPA candidates need to complete an additional 22 credit hours in order to sit for the CPA exam.
 

 Intended Student Learning Outcomes

 
As outcomes of learning in the Major in Accounting, students will be able to:
 

demonstrate fundamental knowledge of and skills in accounting and related areas for entry-level professional accounting positions, professional examinations, and graduate studies

 

apply the skills necessary for financial decision making and reporting

 

describe the relationship of accounting to the broader field of business

 

apply ethical and legal standards and fiduciary responsibilities to the accounting and business environments

 

demonstrate the acquisition of analytical, quantitative, and critical-thinking skills necessary for decision making

 

demonstrate effective professional communication skills

 

 The Program

 
Students who pursue the Major in Accounting must complete the following 60 credit hours. Those students who plan to sit for the CPA exam would then complete the recommended courses in order to fulfill the additional 22-hour CPA requirement.

Note 1:
In order to satisfy the additional Business and/or Economics credits requirement for CPA candidates, the Department highly recommends a combination of the following courses: Busn 320 Marketing; Econ 309 Global Financial Markets; or other Busn courses in the Financial Planning Concentration. Also, the Department highly recommends the following courses in order to fulfill the Communication/English requirement for CPA candidates: Comm 102 Fundamentals of Public Speaking and Engl 312 Business and Professional Communication.
 
Note 2:
In order to complete 150 hours in a normal 4-year undergraduate program, students would need to take an average of 19 credit hours per semester. Therefore, students who plan to sit for the CPA exam might consider summer school or a fifth year in order to fulfill the 150-hour CPA requirement.
