The Major in Health and Fitness Administration is an innovative program that integrates physical education, health, and wellness theory with business and the social sciences to provide students with a sound academic foundation for entry-level positions in the health, fitness, or recreation industries. Specifically, the program is designed to prepare students for managerial, supervisory, and administrative positions in a variety of professional health/fitness career areas such as corporate and commercial wellness/fitness, community recreation leadership, preventative health care, and public fitness and recreation. Students with a background in health and fitness administration have found rewarding careers in the following settings:
 

For-profit, commercial health/fitness centers

 

Voluntary and not-for-profit organizations

 

Public parks and recreation agencies

 

Hotels, resorts, and country clubs

 

Residential health/fitness developments

 

Corporate, in-house health/fitness programs

 

Hospital-based health/fitness facilities

 

 Intended Student Learning Outcomes

 

As outcomes of learning in the Major in Health and Fitness Administration, students will be able to:

 

demonstrate the broad-based knowledge, skills, and abilities that are expected of health/fitness professionals

 

demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and principles forming the theoretical foundation of the technical areas of health/fitness, including health/fitness education, human physiological systems, exercise science, and performance evaluation/assessment

 

explain the principles of effective organization and administration of various types of health/fitness programs and activities

 

demonstrate fundamental knowledge of the relevant principles of business, accounting, and economics

 

apply the concepts, ideas, and techniques from physical education, business, and communication in developing, programming, and implementing a variety of health/fitness activities and programs

 

explain the importance of lifetime health and fitness activities, and their place in modern society

Students must complete a minimum of 59 credit hours, including the Health and Physical Education Core, Business Core, and Correlative Requirements.
