The Importance of the Liberal Arts for Business, Accounting, and Economics Studies

In today's business and economic environment, the only constant is change. As technologies continue to advance and as global trade, communication, and distance barriers continue to diminish, contemporary business faces new opportunities, challenges, and competitive pressures both domestically and internationally. In order to succeed and prosper, organizations need to be able to manage this dynamic environment for competitive advantage.

Consequently, employers are seeking people who are flexible and adaptable, can think for themselves, can see the big picture while not losing sight of important details, and can communicate their ideas effectively. They are searching for graduates who possess an educational blend of business theory and practice coupled with a broad liberal arts background.

 Liberal Arts Programs in Business

In order to contribute to Jamestown College’s mission of balancing a liberal arts education with professional preparation and to incorporate a strong liberal arts component into its business programs, the Department of Business, Accounting, and Economics in the Meidinger Center for Excellence in Business offers the following liberal arts programs in business:

Major in Liberal Arts Business Studies

Liberal Arts Concentrations in the Major in Business Administration

Each of these programs in business requires you to engage in significant study in more than one discipline, and asks you to examine the common assumption that a professional area of study such as business bears little relationship to various other more traditional liberal arts disciplines. Consequently, the very essence of the programs is interdisciplinary enrichment. The principal goal of each of these programs is to broaden your education by encouraging you to integrate business studies with various areas in the liberal arts. This integration serves to widen your horizons intellectually and assists you to see relationships between different areas of human endeavor. Through a combined program of study, you will develop new ways of looking at and understanding each area. Since you have many possible choices for your areas of liberal arts study, the programs require you to give careful thought to the extent to which business principles and theories relate to other disciplines and to reflect upon the potential career possibilities that such combinations would enhance. For example, if you were to pursue a liberal arts program in business that includes a major or minor in art history or studio art, you would be prepared for a management position in a gallery or museum, or to open your own gallery. This is but one of many possibilities that await you with these innovative programs in business.
