The
Jamestown College women’s track team finished off the indoor
season with a strong second-place finish in the Dakota Athetic
Conferece indoor meet.
Nicole Cuppy and Erica Mois won individual conference
championships, and 24 different athletes scored points for the
Jimmies as they piled up 162.5 points, second only to Mary’s
265.5.
“I am a little overwhelmed with how we performed,” said
Jimmies coach Jim Clark. “In every meet, you expect some
things to go wrong, but we had very few disappointments and a
lot of pleasant surprises.”
Cheri Ewert and Marrie Johnson led the way for the Jimmies,
as both had strong days in Spearfish, S.D.
Ewert ran the mile in 5:12.73 (with altitude adjustment).
That was good for a third-place finish and an automatic berth
in the NAIA national indoor meet. She came back after that to
run a second-place adjusted 10:39.6 in the 3,000 and led JC’s
distance runners to a 3-6-7 finish in the mile and a 2-3-8
finish in the mile.
Johnson came up big for the Jimmies in the pole vault, an
event in which Clark did not expect JC to earn a place.
Johnson entered the meet ranked 13th in the DAC-10 but posted
a fourth-place, national-qualifying mark of 10-6. Her previous
best mark was 9-9. She also provisionally qualified with a
7.43, fourth-place finish in the 55 meter dash and in the long
jump with a fifth-place effort of 17-3 1/2. She came into the
meet ranked 12th in the DAC-10 in the 55.
Cuppy, a freshman from Harrold, S.D., claimed the DAC-10
high jump championship with a leap of 5-0 1/2.
Mois, a senior from Frazee, Minn., claimed her fifth DAC-10
long jump title with a jump of 18-6. She also placed second in
the triple jump (37-3 3/4) and fifth in the 55.
Lisa Nayes, battling illness, finished sixth in the mile
before placing third in the 3,000 (10:51.3) in her final
conference meet. the senior from Miles City, Mont., sat out
her freshman indoor season which gave her the opportunity to
compete this winter indoors. Her college track career will
wrap up in Johnson City, Tenn., at the NAIA national indoor.
After winning the pentathlon on Friday night, Kari Pankow
came back the next day to place in three events. She placed
third in the high jump (5-0 1/2) and third in the 1600 relay
and picked up an unexpected fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.19).
Alissa Andrus, a sophomore from Jamestown, placed in three
events. She finished second in the long jump (18-3 3/4) and
made the finals in a tough 55 field to place eighth (7.6). She
also competed in the triple jump for the first time this
season and placed seventh (33-1).
Sarah Hennek ran a season-best 1:00.12 to finish fourth in
the 400, a provisional qualifying time.
Michel Maurer finished a strong fourth in the 800 (2:22) to
qualify for nationals.
The Jimmies added two automatic qualifiers and five
provisional qualifiers. They have athletes qualified for
nationals in 15 of the 20 events.
