Massey, Stoudt provisionally qualify

Two Jamestown College athletes provisionally qualified for the NAIA national track meet and the Jimmie men set a pair of Bismarck Community Bowl and meet records at the University of Mary Open on Sunday.

Chris Massey won the 400 meter hurdles in 54 seconds and Dan Stoudt finished third in the decathlon with 5,228 points, both provisionally earning spots at the national meet.

The 3200 relay team of Joe Makoutz, Phil Nisbett, Sean Iverson and Scott Hargens ran a time of 8:14.15 to set a new Bowl and meet record. And Ryun Hess’ 3:58.37 set a new stadium best in the 1500.

Makoutz also won the 800 in a time of 1:57.34, leading a 1-2-3-4-5-6 finish by the Jimmies, along with teammates Hess (1:58.11), Hargens (1:58.88), Iverson (2:00.31), Curtis Suver (2:01.12) and Nisbett (2:01.51). Suver also placed second in the 1500 (4:02.93).

Massey teamed with Brad Elliott, Eric Quale and Danny Lawson to finish third in the 400 relay (42.64). He also ran a leg on a third-place 1600 relay team along with Stephen Strait, Iverson and Hargens.

Porfiro Gonzalez threw the hammer 148-6 to place second. Spencer Kubat placed third in the high jump (6-4).

“I thought it was a good day for our athletes,” said JC men’s coach Josh Roberts. “We set some really good marks today and are ahead of where we were a year ago.

“Ryun Hess and Joe Makoutz had great days, running three very solid races (both also ran on a B-squad 1600 relay). Chris Massey also ran very well today. I am happy with the progress the team is making as a while and look forward to performing at home next weekend.”

Alissa Andrus earned a first-place finish for the Jimmie women at the Mary Open.

Andrus won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches. She also ran the opening leg on the Jimmies’ third-place 400 relay (49.44) along with Marrie Johnson, Erica Mois and Sarah Hennek

Hennek also had a strong day, adding a second in the 200 (26.04) and a third in the 400 (1:00.72).

Tina Wiederrich also placed in two events with a second in the 100 hurdles (15.66) and a third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.21).

Kari Pankow had her second-best career heptathlon score with a 4,349 and Chrisy Lussenden had a PR score of 3,597. Pankow car a PR javelin throw of 127-1, an NAIA provisonal qualifying mark. and had the best 100 hurdles time (16.31). Lussenden had PRs in the javelin (81-4) and the long jump (14-4 3/4) on Saturday to go along with PRs on Friday in the 100 hurdles (17.03), shot put (28-7 1/4) and 200 (27.2).

Hilary Andvik placed second in the 3000 steeplechase (12:25.1), Nicole Cuppy in the high jump (4-10) and Cassie Dellwo was second in the discus (137-6). improving her provisional qualifying mark from last week.

Michel Maurer placed third in the 1500 (5:01.67) and Lindsey Bolme third in the 5000 (20:10.34).

“We saw some people get back into action and that was encouraging,” said Jimmie women’s coach Jim Clark. “We showed improvement in a lot of areas on a cold and windy day. I think we are a meet or two away from hitting some qualifying marks.”

The Jimmies host the 51st Annual Al Cassell Relays on Saturday at Rollie Greeno Field.
