Texts: Selected fables of la Fontaine; Molière, Le bourgeois gentilhomme; Flaubert, Madame Bovary; selected poetry by Baudelaire and Verlaine; Rostand, Cyrano de Bergerac; Sartre, Huis Clos;  Duras, Moderato Cantabile.  Biographical and historical materials and handouts provided by the instructor.

Course objectives:

  1. The student will read and discuss poetry, plays and novels in French that reflect a variety of genres and literary movements from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
  2. The student will increase her vocabulary and acquaintance with the structure and levels of discourse of French through the reading of unedited works.
  3. The student will learn how to discuss a literary work in French.
  4. The student will improve his/her writing skills through compositions and explications de texte.
  5. The student will memorize a poem in French.

Methods to be used:

In the class meetings, French will be used as the primary means of communication in order to develop the speaking and listening skills of the students. The student will be given materials on the authors, on literary movements and on the specific works which will provide her with historical, cultural and literary contexts for the specific works to be read. Videos, recordings and slides will be integrated into the course. Grammar points will be reviewed and new vocabulary will be introduced as it is encountered in the works.

Criteria for Grading:

Grading will be based on completion of readings, maintenance of a vocabulary and reaction paper journal, quizzes, homework and six compositions.
