Of General
Language Interest:
- Visit the very amazing UNIVERSAL CURRENCY
CONVERTER, where you can convert any amount of any major world currency into any
other. Thanks, Xenon Laboratories!
- Kate's Foreign Language
Teachers' Mall -- a guide to FL publications and materials I first compiled in the
winter of 1998.This is a good starting place for people to find web addresses for FL
organizations and FL product vendors.
- Lingua@web - This
site has language learning and teaching tools for Spanish, French, Italian, and German.
Students can use the site to select any of five levels, ranging from beginning to
advanced. Learning tools include standard exercises as well as memory games, flash cards,
and word searches. Students can also access current newspapers and Internet radio links in
the target language. Future plans include adding more languages and chat sessions with
other students in the target language. Teachers can contribute their lessons to the
development of the site. (submitted by JoAnn Tiedemann, Madison WI)
- Peace Corps Kids World The Peace Corps has
launched a new web site for kids as part of this year's Peace Corps Day - a celebration of
their 38th birthday. Kids World has articles, graphics, and games designed to educate and
entertain children about world geography and the cultures of other countries. Even though
the Peace Corps is a function of the US government, the Kids World site has an
international appeal.
- BABELFISH ... is a free language
translation service that gets my students into trouble when they try to use it. Alta Vista
has recently bought it and offers it as a free translation service -- even at that it's
not worth the price. Trust me on this one...DON'T GO HERE!

(in addition to those you can find through the World Languages Links):
-
Max und Moritz -- the
whole story, complete with illustrations and a quiz.
- Amazon.de -- this is the
German-language mirror site to the domestic Amazon.com online bookstore. It is amazing --
the sheer number of German books only a click away from an international trip to my NoDak
home boggles the mind! For teachers, this resource is great for finding reference works
and for finding out what books are selling and winning prizes in Germany.
- Alan Lareau's Pages -- Alan of
the German Department at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has many fine literature and
cabaret links. An excellent resource for learning about 20th Century German Literature and
